Perched at 2,844 feet in the Buxa Tiger Reserve of Alipurduar, West Bengal, the historic Buxa Fort is a captivating ruins. Originally a Bhutanese garrison guarding the Silk Route, it was captured by the British in 1865. They converted it into a notorious high-security prison, second only to the Cellular Jail, to detain Indian freedom fighters. Today, it is a popular destination for trekkers, offering a soulful experience of history and nature after a 5 km uphill trek from Santarabari.
Upon arrival at the station, the student group will transfer to a forest resort in Lataguri, the gateway to Gorumara National Park. After a briefing on jungle ethics and safety, the afternoon is dedicated to a Jeep Safari through the dense core area of Gorumara, where students can observe the Indian one-horned rhinoceros and diverse bird species in their natural habitat. The day concludes with a visit to the Nature Interpretation Center and an evening cultural program featuring traditional tribal dances.
Stay at Lataguri.
The group will travel toward the eastern fringe of the Dooars, passing through the scenic tea gardens of Malbazar and Birpara. After reaching Rajabhatkhawa, the entry point of the Buxa Tiger Reserve, the group will complete forest formalities and visit the local museum to learn about the region's unique biodiversity. The evening is spent at the riverside village of Jayanti, where students can walk along the expansive dry riverbed of the Jayanti River, which serves as a natural border with the Bhutan hills.

This day is focused on historical education and physical activity, starting with a moderate trek through the forest to reach the historic Buxa Fort. Students will learn about the fort’s significance during the British era as a detention camp for freedom fighters. After descending, the group will head to the sacred Pokhri Hill to observe the rare turtles and fish in the hilltop pond, followed by a quiet evening of group discussion and reflection by the river

The final morning involves a guided nature walk along the forest trails to identify local flora and various Himalayan bird species. This session provides a practical wrap-up of the environmental lessons learned during the tour. Following breakfast, the group will check out and proceed to Alipurduar for their return journey, carrying back a deeper understanding of wildlife conservation and regional history.
